Òhe United Kingdom Shostakovich Society (UKSS) was established
to promote the works of Shostakovich through various
concerts, recitals, publications, lectures and events throughout the
United Kingdom. Previous events have included a weekend concerts in
Cambridge, Oxford and London dedicated to the theme ‘Shostakovich
and Jewish Music’, the Western premie?re of Shostakovich’s Symphony
No.4 arranged by the composer for 2 pianos with a pre-concert talk
by Boris Tishchenko and a concert of Shostakovich and Pasternak. A
large international conference took place in Cambridge in September
2006 to mark the centenary of Shostakovich’s birth. This conference
featured distinguished speakers and performers from Russia, Ukraine,
Azerbaijan, USA and Europe.
The UK Shostakovich Society is a registered charity and has close
links with the Centre Chostakovitch in Paris and the Shostakovich family.
Honorary members include Maxim Shostakovich, Boris Tishchenko, Lord
Harewood, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Claudio Abbado, Rudolf Barshai and
Alexander Lazarev. Sir Edward Downes. The Chairman of the Society is
well-known musician and public figure Mr. Lawrence Owen, who is the
guest of this International Conservatories Week.
The Fitzwilliam String Quartet with residence in Cambridge is the
official musical body of the Society.
