The State Hermitage Orchestra
was founded in 1989 by
the famous conductor, People’s
Artist of USSR, States Prizes winner,
Professor Saulius Sondeckis.
The first members of “St. Petersburg
Camerata”, then the youngest
professional company of the
country, were students of the
Leningrad Conservatoire. On 14th
February 1994 the orchestra took
the title of “State Hermitage Orchestra”.
The company has performed
about 1200 concerts and recorded
more than 30 CDs, including those on Sony Classical label. It has
performed in the best domestic and foreign halls together with such
prominent musicians as Yehudy Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich,
Maxim Schostakovich, Vladimir Minin, Daniil Shafran, Nathalie Gutman,
Ivan Monigetti, Vladimir Krainev, Valerii Afanasiev, Igor Oistrakh, Victor
Tretiakov, Grigory Zhislin, Catia Ricciarelli, Dmitry Khvorostovsky, Lubov
Kazarnovskaya, Nicolai Gedda and Barbara Bonney. The orchestra
works with conductors from Great Britain, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain
and Japan. The orchestra participated in the opening of the Hermitage
exhibitions in various cities of Russia, and has toured many countries
throughout the world.
